What's your area of expertise?

Over the past 10-years I’ve worked across Australia, New Zealand and the USA in a variety of different B2C and B2B marketing roles. I’d describe myself as a marketing specialist who recruits digital marketing talent.

What types of roles do you recruit for?

I look after marketing recruitment for Aquent in Sydney. This includes everything that falls under the marketing umbrella i.e. events marketing, digital marketing, performance marketing, social marketing, content marketing, eCommerce marketing, etc. If the role has the word marketing in it and it’s based in Sydney, there’s a 99% chance I’m looking after it.

Why do you love what you do?

Two words, ‘helping people’. My favourite thing to do is to help others. Being a recruiter lets me do this every day because I can help people find a new job. In my mind, what I do is more than just helping people find “a job” because “a job” means that my candidates are financially secure, they have a daily purpose and they are able to do something they’re truly passionate about.

What industry experience/expertise are you looking for in Marketing Talent?

The three things that I look for are not based on experience or expertise, but more based on character.

Experience and expertise is often the first thing I look at when assessing suitability; however, if the candidate doesn’t pass all three of the ‘vibe checks’ then I won’t put them forward.

  • Is the candidate positive and happy?
  • Is the candidate passionate about what they do?
  • Is the candidate someone who would fit well with the client’s culture?

Describe an ideal client relationship

Professional or personal relationships are very similar in the sense that they are both based on a foundation of trust, transparency and open communication.

What are your top 3 tips for managers who are wanting to hire marketers?

  1. Come and talk to me - rwatts@aquent.com or 02 8288 8288
  2. Take the time to write a good job description. This not only helps me understand what you’re looking for, but it makes you step back and genuinely consider what problem you’re actually trying to solve by hiring this person.
  1. Don’t forget that candidates are interviewing you as well. Clients often forget that when they’re hiring that candidates are assessing your business as well. If the hiring process is slow and is lacking transparency, then candidates will lose interest quickly. When hiring, you should enforce the classic principle of ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’.
