In the age of social media, your profile matters! Not only is it a great way to network but also a valuable tool to promote yourself to prospective employers. Hiring managers now use social networking sites to screen their candidates and some even claim to have rejected a candidate based on inappropriate posts, so it’s really important to make sure your social media persona shows you in the best light.

Check out our advice on how to use social media to your advantage.

Get your profiles up to scratch – make sure each of your social profiles is professional and full of information. That means (depending on the platform) including a professional picture, bio, location, recommendations and portfolio or portfolio link.

Connect with the right people – join groups and follow companies that you’re interested in on Twitter and LinkedIn. You’ll get a personal connection, which might mean you hear about job openings and will be able to talk knowledgeably about the company when you interview.

Engage with others in a positive way – don’t just ask for a job, engage with others about what interests them. Keep it friendly, interesting, and avoid anything inappropriate.

Post regularly – you’ll need frequent posts and engagement to be socially successful. Once a month just won’t cut it, try a few times a week. You can use a service like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to manage your posts. Or use Buffer to schedule your posts and get recommendations on times and content to share.

Let your personality show – your potential employer will want to get a sense of who you are, as cultural fit is a huge factor in hiring decisions. Always try to remember who your audience is.

Have a plan – block out 30 minutes a day to catch up on LinkedIn and Twitter feeds. This is a great way to gather information that will help you connect with individuals on a daily basis. This will also help to make sure you don’t waste your time surfing the web and getting distracted by Facebook!
