The Company We are a leading recruitment partner currently representing one of Australia’s most recognisable brands. Our client is undergoing a massive technical evolution, shifting away from “blueprint-following” to a culture of engineering interrogation and first-principles design.

The Role This isn’t a “sit-in-meetings” role. As a Principal Engineer, you will be the senior-most individual contributor within a high-impact product squad. You will own the full technical lifecycle—from framing the problem and system design to implementation and production operations.

You aren’t just building for your squad; you are the bridge to the enterprise. You’ll identify gaps in global standards, challenge existing architectures, and ensure that nothing is designed in isolation.

What You’ll Do

• Own the Design: Lead end-to-end solution and system design for complex, high-scale projects.
• Interrogate the Blueprint: We don’t want “yes” people. You’ll be expected to stress-test designs and make trade-offs explicit.
• Raise the Bar: You will mentor and grow senior engineers through proximity and direct collaboration—building talent by “doing,” not just advising.
• Innovate with AI: You are already using AI tooling in your daily workflow and will help the team integrate these practices meaningfully.
• Enterprise Influence: Partner with Domain Architects to ensure squad delivery aligns with (and informs) the broader enterprise strategy.

What We Are Looking For

• Technical Mastery: Deep experience in system design at both the application and infrastructure levels.
• Leadership without Management: You have a track record of leveling up those around you without needing a “Manager” title.
• First-Principles Thinking: You can reason through complex problems from scratch rather than defaulting to familiar patterns.
• Hands-on Capability: You still love to code. You lead by example and get into the work when the complexity demands it.
• Modern Workflow: You are an early adopter of AI-assisted development (Copilot, LLMs) to drive engineering efficiency.
